Hi all. It's been a couple years since I've been on. Had to make a new account, couldn't remember the old one.
My issue is '86 NH, she's been sitting for over a year, pickled and battery is on a maintainer. Went to start and she started with a bit of choke. Ran it for only a few moments as I was in disbelief it started. The garage doors weren't open so I killed it. Came back the next day after work, opened the doors, went to start it and it sounded like an M67 detonated and I saw a puff of smoke/mist/debris exit the left side of the engine. Now, starter motor turns but no engine rotation. Nor do I hear any drag on the starter. Near total engine disassembly to repair the starter clutch, right?
BTW, thanks for keeping the site going, I really appreciate it and so many others will as well.

This site is completely new, so even if you used to have an account you would have had to create another one.

Yes, either the starter clutch (extremely rare) or the starter chain require splitting the engine cases to repair them, which means removal from the frame and then teardown to the crankshaft.

What specific bike do you have?  There were several Nighthawks in 1986.
2015 Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 ABS
1984 Honda Nighthawk 700S
2012 Honda NC700X
2005 Vespa GT200
1982 Yamaha Maxim 550 (sold)
2006 BMW R850R (sold)
1981 Honda CX500B (sold)

Thanks mollusc. I have 3 CB700SC's. One is (was) running with around 14k miles on her and the other two are in various stages of completion/customization. I bought this bike from a member in Valdosta, GA a few years back. It's been a superb machine once I showed her some attention. Little things here and there but all in all I can ride her til my rear goes numb.
No big deal then. It's only a machine, it can be repaired.
