Winter Projects

Here we go again, what are your winter projects for this winter?
In my case, I'm going to refurbish my turn signals as the stems are cooked from the sun and all cracked. Tried the marine protector spray but it was too late in the game. Have 2 stems on order but they only have an attachment screw on one end (fender end) so I need to figure something out for attaching the other end to the turn signal case. Will post pics, etc. as I get started on this.
Number 2 on the list is probably a suspension tuning - aka sag adjustment to my weight. All suspension was overhauled last winter.
Number 3 on the list is removing carbs to inspect for dirt in the bowls as I have intermittent idling after carb cleaning last winter. Will also look into the tank, there's probably a screen on the petcock thingy...

Started on the turn signals, removed the broken rear right, and tried mocking up the replacement stem. It is workable and I'll probably restore it but it won't be ready until painting weather next year, as some parts will take color matched paint. Meantime, I found replacements at PartsGiant, $25 a side, ordered both.

So I got these in the mail, looking decent..



but, after opening I'm seeing the differences... threaded stems non-oval on both ends, black plastic case non-grained, orange lens w/out any markings... so I'm thinking to remove just the stem and reuse original casing and lens.

These are the old and new casings, can see the grain on the original (right)..



The stem looks like this, the tube that goes into the black casing is a little long and hits the bulb socket, so I removed about 3mm...



And this is the new stem attached to the original black casing...



Now the reflector gets reattached...



and stacked in place with the small soldering iron...



Then the bulb goes in, after some Deoxit application to socket, and the turn signal makes it back onto the bike..



Job done! Part source is PartsGiant, cost $25 each.

So, today I've measured my front sag, ended up with 37mm. By some accounts that should be within range, but I decided to add 3mm worth of washers on either side. The bike was handling well before so I'll find out next spring if 3mm preload makes a diff.
Next job is to measure sag at rear suspension, I am currently set on 3 (middle) preload on my shock.
