I have an 84 CB 650 and I'm trying to troubleshoot no spark. Bought it from someone recently and had been sitting for 3 to 5 years. A couple of the plug were damaged so I ordered up coils and wires on eBay and they seem to be in really good condition. I installed that along with another CDI unit from an 89 CB 650 and I'm still getting nothing. Popped the cover off on the ignition timing rotor and everything was clean, so I guess I've got a figure out how to test from that point up to the CDI and then determine whether or not the CDI is good and then the coils after that? Also, I bypassed the starter solenoid and went from the battery straight to the starter to get the engine to turn over because the solenoid  and the hand control switch might be corroded. Haven't dug in to that stuff yet. If I am going straight from the battery directly to the starter to turn the engine over, should I still be getting spark with the Ignition  on?

Starter isn't related to ignition.  I'd use a multimeter to check for power on the bottom of the key switch, and also the kill switch.  Your service manual should have a circuit diagram in it that tells you the wire colours to check.

'89 ign module probably has a different advance curve. I would replace it with a 83 to 85 module
