Erratic behaviour from LEDs is often an indication of voltage issues, so if your turn signals are now working properly, that might demonstrate that you've addressed your underlying problem.
That said, the front signals serve double-purpose as running lights and it can be easy to mess them up if you don't put the correct bulbs in or otherwise install correct double-connector lights, and perhaps that is what was causing your earlier blink issues.

They were working as running lights and signals before and after. I do want to get rid of them at some point and try to get an OE style incandescent bulb in a square housing.

A previous owner decided to only make the front turn signals LED and changes the rear signals to a smoked out lens aftermarket style. Also painted the tail light bulb, not the lens, which was easily replaced.
