Excuse me if I (or somebody else) has brought this up, but I need some advice for a fuel filter for a 650-4. It seems like the original is broken, but it is only a fine plastic screen connected to the petcock. Anyone have any experience with a aftermarket filter?

BTW, I've tried the commonly sold autoparts store ones, the ones I've tried would not pass enough fuel. They were all paper filters, perhaps another style will do?

Try a lawn-mower filter, made for gravity-fed carburetors.

I got this one about 6 months ago and really like it. Just under $10

It is rather bulky compared to the smaller ones, you can gauge that by the size of the fuel line connections. But it did fit within the "tank to carbs" run of fuel line for my 1993 NH, I suppose it would fit any motorcycle if not super crowded.

It can be taken apart if needed, filter element replaceable. I have run with other filters in the past, and no filter (other than within petcock). I have grown to appreciate seeing fuel through the glass element.

The 650 should have a filter inside the fuel tank as well, over the intake standpipe.  The parts schematic shows one as well as the filter inside the petcock cup.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Bob, that filter looks like it just night work.

It is a quality filter, you get what you pay for with K&N. Fuel flows unrestricted.

After all the hours I spent earlier this year cleaning my carbs with ultrasonic, blowing out the small passages, all new jets - I figured this was insurance against carbs getting jacked up.

All I have to do now is make sure I ride my bike often, and drain the carbs if I have to go out of town.
