I have turned down several free old BMW's in the past beccause there was no registration or proof of ownership.

In the future, if I find another "gift" what are my options, and things to be wary of?

A Bill of Sale may suffice. Or you may be able to get a Salvage Title. Check with your local DMV.

I think when you apply for a duplicate, it has to be requested by the owner of the bike, so if you pay for this bike and apply for a duplicate title, the original owner may come to claim it and you are out the money. You could possibly apply for a garage holders lein if you have a licensed business or maybe an abandoned vehicle title. Again, once the DMV checks the VIN a letter must be sent to the last registered owner (if that person still lives at the old address). If that person does not answer in a certain amount of days, you should be able to get a title in your name. Many times a pain, but if you apply and get to keep the bike, great, if not you out the money. Good luck!
