Since my 85 650 nighthawk is old, I think it's about time to grease the splines. (both front and back?) Seems to be easy, remove the wheel, unbolt the left-hand swing arm tube, and withdraw and grease the splines. Am I missing something?

What about grease seals?

Anything else?

It's probably a good PM, but I never did it to any of my bikes and got high miles 60-90k miles out of them before trade/sale.

Now your rear splines (the ones you see when you remove the wheel) Should be lubed with a high moly lube at every tire change.

Process should be described in your service manual.  On the 700S, there is a damping cup in the driveshaft that should have the oil changed periodically (say, every 50k miles or so).  Not sure about the 650.

 Thanks for the replies.

After looking into the Loctite grease, another forum said that this product, also by Loctite, is superior:

 Loctite LB 8103

What are your thoughts?

Mullusc,

I think you mean the spring-loaded device to take up shock in the driveshaft?

No.  There is a damping cup deeper inside the mechanism.

I tried to find it last year. It's not available in the U.S., only Europe.
