I have a 85 650 nighthawk. I've had an inconsistent fuel sender from when I bought it. Not sure, but I bet any nighthawks from 83 to 85 has the same sender as long as they have a fuel gauge.

While the rheostat might be the same, I imagine that the float arm will be different because of the different tank shapes between bikes.
You should be able to remove the fuel sender and clean it up, and then tweak the sweeper arm to ensure that it makes reliable contact throughout its range of movement.  Unless the thing is falling apart, they are pretty straightforward to refurbish.

Thanks mollusc I will try that. All I need is a old analog meter to see if it works smoothly. Perhaps my scope will do.

Digital should be fine. Can probably get resistance figures from the manual.

Did this on my V65 Sabre way back. Had to pry a cover off but then you see the windings and wiper arm. I wasn't making contact the whole way.
