Do you need a fuel filter?

(only for carb bikes)

The fuel filters on my '85 650 NH, (one in the petcock, one attached to the petcock inside the tank) were not in good condition, and might have been a reason why I had to rebuild the carbs.

I looked for filters, and finally found one with an acceptable flow rate. (it has a bronze element)

K&N 81-0221. Available on Amazon using the same P/N. Cost, $18.31. Your price might be higher if you don't have Prime

I have read that a lawnmower filter works well with low fuel pressure.

Larry, I considered going that route, but not enough room.

Another thing I didn't mention is because the lack of room under the tank, there is no room for the hose from the peacock to the carbs to run vertically,  instead part of the run travels horizontally. Perhaps if it was a straight shot, another filter would work.

So you have fuel filters that aren't in good condition.  And you add another fuel filter.
Why not just replace the ones that were already installed?

Petcock filter available, tank filter not, according to Partzilla.

 Hi guys,

Yes, I did consider replacing the original 2 filters. They are both expensive however, and I think the sintered bronze filter I just installed works better. A plus is it is transparent, so I can easily see when it needs to be replaced.

If you've got crud in your tank, it could affect the operation of the petcock unless you have the in-tank screen since your filter is now downstream of it.

Mollusc, the tank is mostly clean. I guess I'm lucky.
