Quote from: Bob H on Aug 12, 2023, 05:30 PMMy needles were fine, but I found small "slits" (tears) in 2 diaphragms. I had to hold them up to a light, didn't see them at a glance. Paid out the nose for OEM ones from Partzilla because the diaphragms were still available.

Bike runs MUCH better above 5,000 to redline, where it was kind of lazy in that range before.

Well, after a thorough pre-ride check out that included replacing the plugs and  a very dirty air filter, I rode tested my "new" 700S for the 1st time this morning. The off idle performance was terrible at first but I attribute that to the foam UNI airfilter oil being sucked out. Carburetion cleared up considerably after a few hard accelerations. Then, I started concentrating on performance at various throttle settings. Acceleration is very nice and smooth but part throttle cruising doesn't feel right. It feels like its starving for fuel.
I'm glad Bob H mentioned tears in his diaphragms because, having dealt with that on a Hawk GT I had many years ago, that was the 1st thought that crossed my mind. I'll definitely be examining them closely when I pull the carbs apart for cleaning and re-jetting with a carb kit from carbjetkits.com  I also think running a couple of tankfuls with Seafoam would help. I ordered a carb jet kit after posting this.
Fwiw, my overall opinion of the bike is very good. I'd forgotten just how smooth the motor is and how comfy the seat is. VERY nice!
Stay tuned for future updates. Pun intended. ;)

Hi Guys and gals,I have been trying to get my son's project bike 1996 750 Nighthawk. We took Darryl's bike from The Walking Dead show as our template. Convertering his street bike into a Srambler. We have been having a heck of a time trying to get it run good after removing the air box.Currenty it runs ok until 7k it just starts sputtering?Idle is good half trottle also good.We bought a jet kit from Sigma with bigger slows and mains,142.5 is in the mains now.U guys think I should go bigger? Just changed the coils but that was not it.Still bogs out at 7k?

Well, not to be an ass - but that is why.
I would put the stock airbox back in rather than try to fix it with Jets.
No need to change coils if the removal of airbox resulted in the problem.

Research Constant Velocity carburetors, I just did a quick search and found this quote

This is exactly whats needed in a CV carb, a constant pressure that's able to draw over the venturi circuits within the carb. This is a very layman's way to understand what's going on in the above picture. With pods, it comes down to not creating a strong enough pressure to open the slide needle in your midrange rpms. This is what causes that awful dead spot in your midrange.

if there is a certain look you are going after that is one thing - but to me there is nothing wrong with the stock bike as far as appearance.

Shucks I now wish I hadn't thrown it away ! There's gotta to be a fix? Everybody runs single pods?Is it that all those bikes with the pods run terrible

Pod conversions is why Craigslist is full of half-finished project bikes that "just need carb work."  The only fix is a lot of painstaking tuning that is really just dumping more and more fuel into the cylinders in an attempt to mask the poor performance of the carbs without adequate backpressure.
In addition, each carb is now working independently instead of all drawing from the same source, so each cylinder is running on a different tune.  Which is constantly changing.
Unfortunately, your options are really limited at this point.  There are some people who claim to have gotten pods to work with CV carbs.  I am skeptical.  There are workarounds that may or may not be moderately functional, but they don't have the look you want.  The best option if looks are so important will be to change to a completely different carb setup.

Oh, and you'll be SOL if it ever rains on your pods, of course.

YES to what's already been said.

There are a lot of bikes out there with pods.  Are they running right?  I doubt it.  Even if you ask the owner.  I bet if you borrow that bike it doesn't run right.

Im not a fan of butchering a bike up.  Especially if it ruins  how it runs.

Your only option now is find an airbox. Maybe flatside carbs. Maybe Murray's expensive carbs.
I've got no experience with anything but stock with jetting.
