K&N air filter, oh yes, it's possible

Evening chaps.

So... Air filters...

When I went to buy a new original one I found a few things. First, the only one for sale was in Australia. Second it was very expensive.

Also I really, really hate the airbox. Trying to get the carb rubbers into it is a total nightmare to to mention having to take the rear wheel out.

I needed a solution.

I found an article online where someone with a hawk managed to get a K&N to fit with some nifty silicone reducers using the existing carb rubbers. I went one further and went with stainless steel.

The air filter wasn't cheap and this is all experimental stuff, but I had a play about with it tonight and ya know what.... I think I might just pull this off.

They also say 130 main jet and the bike rips at the top end so I'll be doing extensive carb cleaning and factory pro ject kit too, but one step at a time.

I'll add some pics to show you at what stage I'm at. I'll need some silicone just to make sure it's air tight and I think we're onto a winner with this.

I've seen this setup before.  Like any mods to the intake, your mileage may vary, as well as the amount of work you have to put into it to get it to run to your satisfaction.
For the most part, it always seems to me like the carb adjustments that are necessary to get these type of things to work with a bank of CV carbs are about increasing the amount of fuel going into the cylinders, which is essentially masking a problem without solving it.  But good luck with your experiments.

Thanks I'll keep you posted on how she runs. I have another bank of carbs from the first Nighthawk I purchased so I can strip them, get some stainless hex head bolt upgrades for the carb tops and float bowls, set the float heights, drop in the 130 main jet and new needles, pilot screws and keep them crossed that I have a sound running bike. Can't be worse than it is at the moment popping and backfiring and refused to rev freely  ;D

Float heights can't be adjusted on the 700S.  (Well, they can but it's very risky.  The floats are plastic; some people have softened the height tang and bent it, but they've also lost a couple of floats in the process.)

Interesting to know. If rather not adjust them just when I have I stalled factory pro jet kits in the last on zzr600's n Exup 1000's it's required me to.

One step at a time at the mo, get this air filter on and see how she runs.
