Somewhat related to the torn diaphragm problem.....

I am in the final stage of putting the '85 650cs Nighthawk carbs back together, but am confronted with a unexpected problem. The CV slides have a rubber diaphragm that has to fit into a circular groove in the top of the carb. The diaphragms seem to have shrunk, I get one part in, and the other side comes out of the groove. I'm thinking that perhaps the heat from a hair dryer might help?

Have you tried lifting the slide with one finger so that the diaphragm can be "flopped down" onto the place where it needs to go?
That is what the "motorcycleMD" does in his video course and it works for me.
If you can visually see the diaphram in the place where it needs to go, you put the metal top on to hold it in place with other fingers while you fumble around to start placing fasteners.

I am a newbie when it comes to these diaphragms, I have come to learn that the internet is full of stories of them having small tears, splits, and pinholes. Threads on the Honda ST11000 forums, Gold Wing forums, BMW, Yamaha, etc. I have not seen any comments about them "shrinking" but you may want to search that issue and see what you find.

Don't heat it!!

Try turning it inside out slightly, then put on the chrome cap.  stick a finger or two in the throat to manipulate the slide while fitting the cap.
Can also use grease to hold the lip in place.

Thanks everone, a combination of grease and lifting the slide did it.
