I currently have my case split on my 84cb700sc. I am replacing the starter chain with the newer wider one while I'm in there. The tensioner rod thing is fine. Since you can safely run the motor without it, should I preemptively remove it? The rod failing and busting the chain seems to be common. I am worried about it even with the new chain. Thoughts?

the chain needs the tensioner.  If it didn't, Honda wouldn't have put one in there.

That chain does NOT need the tensioner.  Especially not with the stronger chain.
It will stretch over time, of course, but you can safely run without the tensioner.

That said, if yours is in good condition, I would leave it in place.  The rod only breaks when the overstressed chain snaps and catches on it, or the tensioner slipper fractures because the chain is flexing too much.

Seems reasonable, thank you. Makes sense the tensioner breaks due to other stuff going wrong, it's not likely the cause of the failure. Going to replace the chain and leave the rest as is.

Hello , I have a question, Mryan 667 said he was replacing 84cb700s starter chain with a wider /newer one , What is the part number of the chain and what models does it fit. Thanks, Tim
