Replacing the oil filter

I have a 1985 650sc Nighthawk
I've heard that it is possible to change the original filter for a spin-on. Anyone done it?

Any negatives?

I know that I read about this on the ancient forum, but I don't remember any details.  There didn't seem to be a downside from what I recall.
